Phase 4 medians are completed and Phase 3c progresses with concrete
The US 34 and Taft Avenue Intersection Improvements Project has completed Phase 4 median construction. However, the project will be shifting traffic control to complete temporary striping to restore the two westbound and eastbound lanes along US 34/Eisenhower to align with the new medians. This work will take place on Thursday, June 26, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday, June 27.
During this operation, there will be a brief period on Thursday night when traffic will be shifted closer to the medians. This temporary adjustment will allow crews to safely complete striping along the outer edges of the roadway. The new traffic control will be in place until Phase 4 is completed. The remaining Phase 4 work will include milling, paving and restriping, which will be completed at night to lessen traffic impacts. The US 34 and Taft Avenue Intersection Improvement project is still on track to be completed by the end of July.
Access updates include:
- The left turn for eastbound traffic into the Safeway parking lot will be restored.
- The left turn onto Westshore Drive from eastbound US 34 will remain open.
Phase 3c
Phase 3c is progressing with concrete forms and sidewalk installations north of US 34 to 18th Street. Phase 3c is still under full closure to complete the remaining concrete work. Phase 3c will require an additional day of work on Saturday, June 27. Working hours on Saturday will be from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Medians along US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard
As part of the Phase 4 improvements, changes to the eastbound and westbound lanes on US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard include the extension of left-turn lanes to increase intersection capacity and reduce congestion.
The first improvement is the extension of the westbound left-turn lane at US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard and Taft Avenue. This added capacity will help prevent traffic congestion from backing up on US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard. The extension of the left-turn lane prevents left-hand traffic from backing up in the through lanes and improves safety and operations of the intersection. As a result, the eastbound left-turn lane on US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard into the Village Inn Shopping Center has been removed to accommodate the longer turn lane. However, U-turns near Westshore Drive will remain accessible.
The eastbound left-turn lanes at US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard and Taft Avenue has been extended to improve intersection capacity and enhance traffic flow. As a result of this modification, the left-turn lanes into some of the existing access points in this area are no longer available. These improvements are designed to enhance community safety while facilitating smoother traffic movement through this busy intersection.
