Construction Update: April 17

East First Street Closure Extended Due to Ground Conditions

Construction for the First Street Wastewater Improvements project is ongoing. Due to unexpected ground conditions, the full closure of East First Street, just east of North Denver Avenue, will be extended. Local residents, businesses and emergency vehicles will still have access.

Groundwater and wet soil are making it hard to build a solid base for new pavement. The soil conditions are not ideal, so crews need more time to refill the trench, dry and stabilize the ground, and add structural materials (rock). This makes the work take longer than usual. In the coming weeks, lanes are expected to reopen in phases as work progresses.

Detour Information:

During the closure, traffic will follow these detours:

  • Eastbound detour: Eastbound traffic on First Street will be detoured north on Denver Avenue, east on US 34/Eisenhower Boulevard, and south on North Boyd Lake Avenue.
  • Westbound detour: Westbound traffic traveling to First Street will be routed east on First Street (which becomes Corvus Drive and then Fifth Street) to North Boyd Lake Avenue, then north to US 34/ Eisenhower Boulevard, west to Denver Avenue, and south back to First Street.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other unexpected conditions. For questions about the project, please call 970-783-7225 or email firststreetimprovementsproject@getinfonow.us.
